Why We Built rubik.page
Almost everyone has a scrambled 3×3 Rubik's Cube sitting on a shelf or desk. When people try to solve it online, they usually run into two frustrations:
- Traditional solvers are tedious to enter: Tapping 54 colored squares by hand while mentally unfolding a 3D cube onto a flat 2D net often leads to flipped faces and cryptic “Invalid cube” errors.
- Video tutorials do not match the cube in your hand: Static diagrams in books or videos show an idealized example cube, leaving beginners stuck the moment their own cube lands in a slightly different case or they lose track of which face is Front after rotating the puzzle.
We designed rubik.page to bridge both gaps in a single web application that opens instantly on any phone, tablet, or desktop browser.
What Makes rubik.page Different
- Automatic camera scanning in any order: Simply hold each of the six faces in front of your webcam or phone camera. Our CIELAB computer vision tracker adapts to warm indoor bulbs, pastel stickerless cubes, and dim rooms, confirming each face in half a second and automatically finding the valid 3D orientation across all 4,096 face rotations.
- Full manual editor with custom color schemes: Don't have a camera handy, or own a non-standard promotional cube? Switch to Color by hand at any time, paint stickers on the unfolded net, or tap any two center stickers to swap center colors to match your exact cube.
- 20-move Kociemba solver with 3D guidance: In Solve mode, Herbert Kociemba's two-phase algorithm finds a solution of 20 moves or fewer. Every turn is shown with a smooth 3D arrow, a fixed orientation miniature, and plain-English instructions so you never need to know cube notation to restore your cube.
- Physical defect & repair diagnostics: If your cube has a twisted corner, a flipped edge, two swapped pieces, or swapped center caps from an earlier pop, rubik.page detects the exact physical defect, solves the rest of the cube around it, and turns the final layer 45° so you can safely fix the piece by hand.
- Automatic progress saving: Your scanned cube, exact solution, current move, and training progress are saved locally in your browser so you can close the tab, take a break, or export your cube/lesson to a JSON file and continue later.
Teaching the Layer-by-Layer Method on Your Own Cube
When you press Train after scanning, rubik.page does not just hand you a 20-move computer shortcut—it generates a personalized, interactive 7-stage lesson on your exact cube:
- White stays on top from start to finish: Unlike tutorials that flip the cube upside down halfway through, our method keeps the white center on top (
U) for all 7 stages so beginners never lose their orientation. - Five core algorithms built on one 4-move rhythm: Almost every stage relies on the four-move “square” trigger (
R' D' R Don the bottom orR U R' U'on the top), explained in detail in our Beginner Algorithms Guide. - Guided Learning & Self-Check modes: In Learn mode, the 3D trainer outlines the piece to find, shows where it belongs, and explains each formula chunk. In Test yourself mode, you find the target piece and choose the case on your own before the moves are revealed.
Camera Safety and Transparent Data Practices
Your camera activates only when you explicitly press Scan my cube and grant browser permission, and it turns off automatically the moment all six faces are scanned. Video frames are used solely to detect Rubik's Cube sticker colors and diagnose scanner accuracy—never to identify people. You can read full technical details in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
